Oh man: Seven newsreader Ryan Daniels hilarious AFL ladder blunder, Adelaide mistake, roasted

Channel 7 sports reporter Ryan Daniels has been stitched up on morning radio after a graphics mistake left him hung out to dry on Sunday night.

Daniels was reading the sport for 7 News Perth and wrapped the big AFL stories of the weekend.

Just before moving on, the news put up a graphic of the current AFL ladder and it painted an interesting picture.

Only two teams were in the right position — Adelaide in 15th and North Melbourne in 17th — while the Crows featured on the ladder nine times, and the Brisbane Lions three times.

It was a hilarious mistake which had some fans needing a double take at the screen.

While it was quickly removed, and you couldn’t fault Daniels as he continued without missing a beat to read out the current standings on the actual ladder, some were quick to rewind in order to have another look. It was also put up online for all the world to see.

If he thought he was going to get away with it, Daniels, who has a regular segment on 96FM Perth’s Clairsy & Lisa — Dean Clairs and Lisa Shaw — was stitched up by the radio hosts.

After talking footy, the hosts were clearly itching to get to talking about the graphic.

“Ryan, can we talk about the ladder that popped up last night on the Channel 7 News?” Shaw laughed.

Daniels, who was part of the Logie-winning Channel 7 coverage of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, joked: “Are you going to make me give my Logie back?”

“What’s going on Rhino?” Clairs said.

“Oh man,” Daniels said, audibly blushing.

“It was very unusual,” Shaw continued. “It only had a couple of teams on it, Adelaide’s on there 11 times, Brisbane are on a couple of times, Essendon is number one, Carlton is number two. And there’s no Eagles, there’s no half the teams.”

Daniels laughed: “The first giveaway was that Essendon was first, there’s you first problem.

“If you wanna know how many people are watching, just make a really big mistake because I reckon I got about 20 messages last night and about a billion on social media.

“So for those who were watching, yes, the gremlins got in the system.

“I promise you that I sat there for 20 minutes perfectly crafting the ladder to be exactly the way it is, three way tie at the top, I had this script written and everything. And … I don’t know what happened man.”

Clairs said: “If Lisa and I weren’t your friends, we would say ‘you had one job Ryan’.”

Daniels replied: “I got some helpful advice from one person saying just that, ‘you had one job’. That person can come and do work experience next Sunday, and I’m going to give them some tasks.”

Daniels said he would run the ladder again on Monday’s edition and said he “will try to leave Adelaide out 10 times.”

Got to love live TV.
