Ty Lucas Biography
Ty Lucas, a senior in high school, had his entire college future planned out, or so he believed. The Columbus, Georgia native intended to attend Georgia State to play running back. However, while speaking with his father, who was deployed in Afghanistan, he suggested that his son try out for a walk-on position at a university where his degree would mean more…a institution like Clemson.
Despite being a lifelong South Carolina fan, Lucas heeded his father’s advice and approached his high school coach, who had previously coached at Florida State, about speaking with Dabo Swinney because the two knew each other. Later that year, after discussing it with Swinney, he was invited to play as a walk-on at Clemson.
He was a standout athlete at Chattahoochee High School, competing in baseball, basketball, football, and wrestling without missing a beat. Despite being one of the finest players in his high school, it took him a week at Clemson to realise that football was no laughing matter.
“When I first arrived here, I was more nervous than excited since I knew it would be nothing like playing in high school.” I arrived here as a running back, playing behind Travis Etienne, Tavien Feaster, and Adam Choice. There were so many excellent players.”
Despite playing running back throughout high school, Lucas was able to learn a lot about the position while playing with some of the finest running backs in the country.
“I’ve played running back my entire life, and it makes football fun for me.” I enjoy being able to go about and make plays while feeling like I’m contributing to the team.”
Being on the offensive side of the ball, Lucas has learned a lot about the game from Offensive Coordinator Tony Elliot, but even more about life.
“Coach Elliot has taught me a lot about manhood and life just as much as he has taught me about football.”
While he gained numerous life lessons while playing football at Clemson, Lucas had already faced many challenges growing up with a father in the military.
“Having my family so far away has been the most difficult hurdle I’ve experienced while at Clemson.” My father is in the military, and between my freshman and sophomore years, my family was stationed in Hawaii. They were stationed in California from my junior year until now.”
Lucas got the biggest surprise of his life three years ago during the Military Appreciation Day game when his father, who had been in Afghanistan for the previous nine months, showed up.
“I was completely unprepared for that. I found out two weeks before the game that my father was returning after being gone for almost a year. Then I received a phone from Afghanistan, and it was my father informing me that he would be unable to return home for another four months. It was heartbreaking to hear because there was nothing I could do about it, but I promised to see him when he returned.
